SunRail Station Area Planning Studies

The Regional Planning Council, on behalf of twenty six partners that comprise the East Central Florida Communities Consortium, was awarded $2.4 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to plan for transit oriented development around future SunRail station locations. The majority of the grant funds will be passed directly to local governments to develop and prepare for implementation of these community planning efforts. SunRail represents an historic opportunity to transform the communities using the commuter rail service as a catalyst for and inclusive growth, particularly in minority and/or low-income neighborhoods adjacent to several of the committed stations. The grant funding will support detailed station area planning for 6 out of the 12 Phase I SunRail stations, affordable housing assessments for all 12 Phase I stations, and regional collaboration to share best practices and to guide future transit planning in East Central Florida.

East Altamonte Springs SunRail Station Planning Study

The County is a sub-recipient of a $2.4 million HUD Communities Grant that was awarded to the East Central Florida Planning Council (ECFRPC) in 2012.

The grant money is used in part by the ECFRPC to manage the overall grant. The County received funding of $134,00 to complete a East Altamonte SunRail Station Area Study Plan. In February of 2014, the County met with the selected consultant, Renaissance Planning Group, to discuss the overall approach to implementing the grant and created and met with a Working Group of residents and property owners who serve as a steering group for the study.

The study will be looking at three main topics: connectivity, from the unincorporated community of East Altamonte to the SunRail station, and development potential and housing needs in the study area adjacent to the SunRail station. The study is conceptual in nature and will not make specific development recommendations but rather prepare a set of development policies and regulations designed to guide the desired growth and community development of the area. These will be recommended to the County Board.

Sanford SunRail Station Planning Study

The County and City are sub-recipients of a $2.4 million HUD Communities Grant that was awarded to the East Central Florida Planning Council (ECFRPC) in 2012.

The grant money is used in part by the ECFRPC to manage the overall grant. The County received funding of $84,477 to complete a Sanford SunRail Station Area Study Plan in conjunction with the City of Sanford. In January of 2014, the County met with the selected consultant, IBI Group, to discuss the overall approach to implementing the grant and created and met with a Working Group of residents and property owners who serve as a steering group for the study.

The study will be looking at three main topics: connectivity, from the Goldsboro, Lockhart, and Riverview areas to the SunRail station, development potential west of the railroad line, and housing needs in the study area. Study is conceptual in nature and will not make specific development recommendations but rather prepare a set of development policies and regulations designed to guide the desired growth and community development of the area surrounding the SunRail station. These will be recommended to the City and the County Boards.
