Soldiers Creek, Gee Creek, and Little Lake Howell Basin Study

CIP No. 02207094-2 (East County Basins Group A)

BCC Districts 1, 2, 3 and 4

Project Overview

Seminole County Public Works Department/Watershed Management Division has initiated the development of a Watershed Management Plans (Drainage Basin Studies) for the Soldiers Creek, Gee Creek, and Little Lake Howell (Lake Tuscawilla) drainage basins (CIP 02207094-2, Group A), also known as East County Basins Group A. The plans are being developed by an engineering consulting team hired by the County.

The Soldiers Creek, Gee Creek, and Little Lake Howell basins encompass approximately 35 square miles (~22,000 acres) in eastern Seminole County. Little Lake Howell, Lake Tony, Lake Prairie, Triplet Lake, Lake Concord, Lake Kathryn, Gee Creek, Lake Fairy, Lake Wildmere, Rock Lake, West Lake, Greenwood Lake, and Soldiers Creek are some of the major water features within the group of basins. Each of the three basins ultimately drain into Lake Jesup and eventually the St. Johns River, just north of SR 46. The basin areas include portions of the cities of Lake Mary, Longwood, Sanford, Winter Springs, Altamonte Springs, and Casselberry.

These basins have experienced significant growth since the last studies were completed in the late 1990s. The update will:

  • Incorporate developments and infrastructure improvements built since the previous studies
  • Identify flood-prone areas within the basins
  • Estimate flood impacts to roadways and buildings
  • Update the 100-year flood maps
  • Evaluate and rank conceptual Capital Improvement Projects that will serve to alleviate flooding and improve water quality
