UPDATE 4/13/21: Bacteriological samples collected yesterday, April 12th, have returned negative for contaminants. If samples collected today, April 13th, return tomorrow negative for contaminants, the boil water advisory will be lifted.

A System Wide precautionary boil water advisory was issued Saturday, April 10, 2021, at 6:00 a.m. due to an interruption of power at the water treatment plant. The power was restored and the distribution system was flushed, we have commenced taking bacteriological samples as a precautionary measure.

Reverse 911 calls with information of the event were sent and large street signs were placed at specific intersections within the service area.  Therefore, as a precaution, we advise that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or washing dishes be boiled. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: HOW DID THIS OUTAGE OCCUR?

A: This advisory has occurred as a result of a fault in the backup generator systems at the Southeast Regional Water Treatment Plant, causing them not to engage following a power outage. Staff have identified and corrected this issue to ensure it does not occur in the future.

Q: HOW DO I KNOW IF MY HOME IS AFFECTED?

A: Any customer located east of S.R. 436 who receives their water from Seminole County Environmental Services (excluding Black Hammock) is affected by this advisory. Residents can find more information about their utility provider at Seminolecountyfl.gov on the My Resident Page, or by calling Environmental Services customer service at (407) 665-2110.

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I DRANK THE WATER?

A: Don’t panic – the chances of becoming ill are very slim. Seek medical attention only if you experience any symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps.

Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO TEST THE WATER?

A: Bacteriological samples typically take one full day to process, with results typically received in late-afternoon the day after samples are taken. Legal requirements mandate that two (2) consecutive days of testing must show clean returns prior to a boil water advisory being lifted.

Q: WHAT IS THE WATER BEING TESTED FOR?

A: Water samples are tested for Total Coliforms, a group of related bacteria that, while mostly harmless to humans themselves, serve as a useful indicator of other potential pathogens in the water.

Q: HOW LONG WILL THIS ADVISORY LAST?

A: All bacteriological samples within the affected area must test negative for two (2) consecutive days before a boil water notice to be lifted. At present, three (3) out of 140 samples taken Saturday and Sunday have returned positive and are being re-tested. Updates will be provided daily following receipt of each day’s test results; if samples taken Monday and Tuesday return negative, the earliest the boil water notice can be lifted is late Wednesday afternoon.
