BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The
National Scenic Trail System Act of 1968 created a program to preserve
and certify trail corridors that meet specified criteria. Currently there
are eight National Scenic Trails, all of which travel through several
states with the exception of the Florida National Scenic Trail.

LOCATION: The
Seminole County portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail traverses
the entire County from Chuluota to Sanford mostly following the paths
of other existing and planned trails.
The existing certified portion
begins at the Flagler Trail Trailhead at Snow Hill Road and ends at the
Seminole County Environmental Studies Center. There is parking available
at both of these points. Please follow the Flagler
Trail link for directions to the trailhead. To get to the Environmental
Studies Center, take US 17-92 to SR 419. Take 419 south to Osprey Trail
and turn left. Parking is available at Soldier's Creek Park on the
right-hand side of SR 419.
Although this is the only
certified portion, the entire length of the trail through Seminole County
is blazed and can be hiked.
LENGTH: The
entire length of blazed trail is 33 miles long. The certified portion
of the trail is 17 miles long.
STATUS: Certification
of the rest of the Florida National Scenic Trail was included as a project
to be funded by the "Completing the Trails Connection" referendum.
County staff is currently working on a plan to complete this project.
CHARACTER: The
Florida National Scenic Trail is mostly unpaved except where it passes
along some of the existing Cross
Seminole Trail and through the Lake Mary area where it follows roadways
and existing trails to reach
the Seminole
Wekiva Trail. The trail passes through some of the most scenic
areas of the County.
