LOCATION: The
Flagler Trail will run from the Orange County line in Chuluota to the St.
John's River north of Lake Harney. The open portion runs from the Orange
County Line to the Econlockhatchee
River and from the Econlockhatchee River to the Geneva
Wilderness Area and then from SR 46 in Geneva to the St. John’s River.
Parking
for the trail is currently available in several places: the Snow
Hill Road Trailhead, Little-Big
Econ State Forest, Geneva
Wilderness Area, Lake Mills
Park, and the St.
Johns Trailhead.
LENGTH: The Flagler Trail will be 18 miles long when completed. The open portion of the
trail is 12 miles long.
STATUS: The Flagler North Section from SR 46 to the St. John’s River is complete, as is the Flagler South Section from the Orange County Line in Chuluota to the Geneva Wilderness Area. There is; however, a “missing link” between CR 426 and SR 46 in Geneva.
OWNERSHIP & MAINTENANCE: The
Flagler Trail is owned by Seminole County and maintained by Seminole
County Parks and Recreation.
CHARACTER: The Flagler
Trail is an unpaved wilderness trail located in rural Seminole County.
Because of its length, scenic beauty, and accommodation of various activities,
the Flagler Trail has been designated as one of the county's Showcase Trails.
HISTORY: The
Flagler Trail is located along an abandoned railroad corridor that came
to be known as State Road 13. The corridor was never used as a road, however,
and the railroad was eventually abandoned in the fifties. The right-of-way
was acquired by Seminole County in 1984 from the Florida
Department of Transportation and was restricted to public use. Around
1975, the Florida
Trail Association designated the southern portion of the trail as a
part of the Florida National Scenic Trail, a designation that must be given
by the U.S. Congress based on the length and scenic quality of a trail.
It has been functioning as a public wilderness trail ever since.
FUTURE: Before
the Department of
Transportation abandoned State Road 13 right-of-way, they allowed segments
to be used by private owners. This has created gaps in this area that may
potentially be difficult to fill in the future. A survey of the area is
currently underway to determine alternate pathways to connect the southern
portion at CR 426 to the section north of S.R. 46.
