Much of the trail system on the Black Bear Wilderness Area has been established on historic levees and for the
most part stays dry year round. However this site is located within the floodplain of the St. Johns River and may
experience significant flooding during the rainy season. From the parking area follow the blue blazes on an
approximate 2 mile round trip to the St.Johns River and back. If you're quiet along the way, you may be fortunate
enough to observe species such as the Great Blue Heron, River Otter and American Alligator. The trail does
contain some slopes, wet areas and tree roots so please watch your step.

The Black Bear Wilderness Area has an array of
natural communities such as Hydric Hammock,
Floodplain Swamp, Floodplain Marsh, and Mixed
Hardwood Swamp. Some of the more common
