Why new Commission District boundaries?
Section 124.01(1), Florida Statutes (2000) requires Commission Districts
to be "as nearly equal in proportion to population
as possible" and Subsection (3) also requires
that changes be made to keep the districts as nearly
equal in proportion to population as possible only
in odd numbered years. The preliminary 2000 Census
population results were made available to the County
in accordance with P.L. 94 -171 by the U.S. Bureau
of the Census in May 2001. This census data showed
a total County population of 365,196 persons. It
was therefore necessary to identify boundaries for
5 commission districts that each contained as close
to 73,039 persons as possible. Additionally, legal
requirements are in place that state that no current
commissioner can be "redistricted" out
of their district, e.g. their home(s) becomes the
initial starting point for the revised district.
Since the Seminole County School Board boundaries
are coincidental with Board of County Commissioner
boundaries this caveat was true for School Board
members as well. Have a comment on the new
boundaries? Contact
