Electrical utility companies (such as Florida Power and Light and Progress Energy) own and maintain the street lights and poles located throughout Seminole County. The street lighting equipment installed in most residential areas in the unincorporated area of the County is funded through special assessments districts called MSBUs.
When minor repairs are required, such as a non-functioning light, property owners are encouraged to contact the power company directly for repair services. In most instances, a direct request from property owners to the power company will expedite the scheduling of the service response.
When reporting an equipment repair problem to the power company, it is always helpful to provide the address of the pole location and its assigned number which can be found on a metal plate on the pole at approximately five feet above the ground.
Which Power Company Should I Contact?
The lights on your street are powered by the same company that provides electricity to your home. Please contact the company that provides power to your home. Contact information appears below:
Progress Energy
Florida Power & Light Company (FPL)
If you experience any difficulties in reporting the repair request or in receiving service for street lighting equipment funded through an MSBU, please contact the MSBU Program.
For Trimming Tree Vegetation from Power Lines - Contact the Power Company Directly
Because power lines are not a component of the lighting equipment funded through the MSBU Program, it is necessary for residents to contact their power company directly to file a request for tree trimming. Please contact the company that provides power to your home. Contact information is shown below.
Progress Energy
Florida Power & Light Company (FPL)
Please note that the Seminole County Public Works Department (Roads-Stormwater Division) performs “safety” trimming of trees in unincorporated areas of the County. Such trees must be located along County maintained roads, within the County right of way, and must be considered a hindrance to safe travel on roadway or use of public sidewalks. To request trimming, contact Seminole County's Public Works Roads-Stormwater Division at 407-665-ROAD (7623), or click HERE to complete the on-line service request form, or click HERE to visit the Roads-Stormwater website.
For Major Repairs Only - Contact the MSBU Program
For repairs of street lighting equipment funded through an MSBU that are more extensive, such as replacement of a damaged pole, please communicate your request via the MSBU Program. The MSBU Program offers two convenient ways for requesting street light repairs:
- Complete the online repair request form. The information submitted on the form will assist the MSBU Program in coordinating the repairs with the power company servicing your area.
- Contact the MSBU Program at 407-665-7178. We will document all of the necessary information and report the problem to the power company servicing your area. If possible, please provide the address of the pole location and its assigned number which can be found on a metal plate on the pole at approximately five feet above the ground.
Covered and Non-Covered Repair/Maintenance Services
The repair and/or maintenance provisions associated with the street lighting equipment funded through the MSBU Program, and provided by the power company, is regulated by the Public Service Commission.
The repair/maintenance fee charged to the MSBU Program obligates the power company to provide any service that is necessary to keep the equipment in good working order. Therefore, the maintenance service requirements have limitations. For example, the routine painting of poles is an optional maintenance service. In certain situations, painting may be available from the power company. However, if painting services are made available, the scheduling lead time for the service is typically in the realm of 12 to 18 months at minimum. To inquire about scheduling pole painting, please contact the MSBU Program or complete the online repair request form.
