Look to see if your meter has a leak indicator. With no water being used anywhere in the house, the indicator should not move. If it does, it indicates a continuous leak exists somewhere between the meter and inside the house (faucet, toilet, hot water heater, break in the service line, or malfunctioning water conditioning unit, for example). Look carefully, as low leakage shows very slow movement. Some water loss cannot always be identified by this method. For example, loss of water from a faulty toilet flapper valve stops once the valve is back in place.
If there is no leak indicator on the meter, write down all numbers on the meter register. Wait an hour and reread numbers. If numbers change, there is a leak. Make sure no water is being used during leak check.
